Flatland Prayer recontextualizes American songwriting in a contemporary setting. The trio released their debut album, "Like Staring Straight into the Sun," in May of 2024. with a subsequent tour across Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. As winners of Keep an Eye: The Records, they will be releasing a double LP in January 2026.
Flatland Prayer pulls from a wide variety of influences, boiling each song down to its essence and using improvisation to synthesize it into their cohesive sound. Folk, indie, bluegrass, and jazz are all readily incorporated into a Flatland Prayer performance, as well as nonmusical elements such as spoken word and performance art. This combination gives the trio their signature retro-futurist sound, wherein the music sounds both novel and eerily familiar. Though their influences are broad-reaching, Flatland Prayer always brings storytelling to the forefront; each of their sets has its own narrative flow reminiscent of a film or theater performance.
Most recently, Flatland Prayer brought their literary approach to TivoliVredenburg and Bimhuis, where they performed their new program, Flatland Prayer: FANATIC. Featuring Joris Roelofs on bass clarinet, FANATIC tells the story of the January 6th Capitol riots, juxtaposed with the response from the left to Trump’s re-election.

Like Staring Straight into the Sun is the metaphor that the album encapsulates: bold, confrontative, and ill-advised. Written by bassist River Adomeit in the summer of 2022, the album serves as an audio diary of a tumultuous period of River’s life. Together with Antonio Moreno on trumpet and Liva Dumpe on vocals, they freshly interpret this intimate collection of songs dealing with themes of fragility, religion, perfectionism, and identity.
